Depending on which state or territory you live in across Australia, all learners licences are given out by each states respective roads and transport authority. If you’re unsure where to go for oyurs, this quick guide to getting started will help you out.

For those learners from NSW, the RTA (Roads & Traffic Authority) issues all licences in that state. They provide a lot of other information as well at their website which you can visit here

If you’re from Victoria, VicRoads is the place to go for your licence. Here’s an interesting fact; a VicRoads licence is cheaper than a NSW RTA licence! You can find more information at the VicRoads website.

If you hail from Western Australia, the department of Transport handles all manner of licencing. Here’s another interesting tidbit; light cars no longer require registration stickers on light vehicles.

Welcome back and today we’re going to look at the remaining 5 mistakes that learner drivers often make after finishing driving school.

If you can’t see where you’re driving, you’re bound to have an accident at some point. It’s important to have your eyes tested regularly. You may not even realise you’re starting to develop a problem with short or long sightedness. While you will be given a simple eye test each time you renew your licence, it’s better to take a proactive role. Let’s keep the meaning of “blind spot” to just one meaning!

Being unable to see what’s in front of you leads us to the second piece of advice. It’s crucial you’re not only able to see what is in front of you but what is coming up along side and behind you. If you use a shared vehicle, people will often adjust the mirrors to suit their own height and needs. Check your mirrors and ensure you’re able to see what other motorists are doing before you begin your trip. It doesn’t matter whether your going to the shops or on a long trip. Do it every time!

If you have young children or will be driving with kids in the car, it’s important to have a car seat properly fitted in the backseat. It’s illegal to have them on the front passenger side, so stick to the backseats. Improperly fitted car seats are one of the leading causes of injury and death amongst children of a fairly young age. Be smart and purchase a car seat that meets the industry standard and is Australian road approved.

While we covered off of on drinking and driving last time, it’s also important you don’t eat while driving. As tempting as it may be to tuck into your takeaway while behind the wheel, this severely impacts your ability to control the car and react to other people. We here it time and time again where someone spills a hot drink or drops their lunch in their lap and moments later they’re involved in a car accident. Wait till you arrive home or back at work and eat your meal then.

Don’t overload your car with passengers. It’s fun to head out for a night on the town or see a movie but there are laws that stipulate how many passengers a learner and provisional driver can take with them. This also varies from state to state and whether you’re driving during the day or at night. Check with your state laws to find out what restrictions may apply to you.

First on our list is texting while driving! New laws have come into effect that now make this illegal and it’s no wonder they made this law! There was an upsurge in traffic accidents as the use of mobile phones increased during the early the mid 2000′s. Do yourself a favour and pull over to the side of the road if you must send a message or wait until you’re home to read your SMS.

Drink driving is a mistake anyone of any age can make but it’s often one young people make without realising. The term “drink driving” doesn’t necessarily mean you must feel the effects the alcohol is having on your system. There is often alcohol in medications such as cough syrup which is more than enough to put you over the limit. Imagine the shock and horror of losing your licence because you had cough medicine for a sore throat. Check the alcohol content of anything you eat and drink if you plan to drink and are still on your learners or provisional licence.

Do you remember a commercial advertisement on TV that ran often and repeated itself constantly? It went like this. “Wear a seat belt, wear a seat belt, wear a seat belt, wear a seat belt”. Get the point? Great! Wear your seat belt whenever you’re behind the wheel. It doesn’t matter if you’re only going down the shops for a few items. Besides saving your life, it’ll save you money if you are pulled over by the police. 2 things for the price of none! Bonus!

Did you have yourself a HUGE weekend and are feeling the effects of those parties come Monday morning? Fatigue is a big killer on our roads and it’s a huge factor in many car accidents of which many are fatal. A micro sleep can be the end of you within seconds. It’s important to be attentive and fresh when you’re a new driver because you lack much experience that only comes with time.

When someone cuts you off in traffic, it can be REALLY frustrating. In fact, it can be so frustrating that people flip out and go into a state of road rage. What’s sadder is you don’t have to be the one in a bad mood to feel the effects of road rage. The best thing to do when confronted with someone who is experiencing road rage is to lock your car doors, avoid eye contact and don’t say or do anything to further agitate them. Quietly drive away and don’t panic!
